Chapter Seventeen

~ Eiji ~

I opened my eyes when I felt the mattress underneath me and looked up. I don't think Dmitri was aware that I was awake yet. He was trying to slowly pull my shoes off.

I waited until he'd done that and then was pulling the comforter up over me before grabbing his wrist.

Dmitri's eyes snapped to my face.

"Stay," I mouthed silently.

Dmitri's brow furrowed. "Are you sure?"

I nodded.

Dmitri finished tucking the blanket around me before kicking his shoes off and stretching out beside me, rolling until he was facing me. He did leave a bit of space between us, and I appreciated that, but it wasn't what I wanted right now.

One of the tortures of being afraid of people was never being able to touch anyone or get a hug. I missed hugs. I missed being held by someone that cared for me.

I was pretty sure Dmitri cared for me.

I scooted close enough to lay my head on his arm and then grabbed the other one and pulled it around me. I swallowed tightly before tilting my head back to look up at him.

"Okay?"

Dmitri smiled before pulling me closer. I almost shivered in delight at how warm his body was pressed against mine. I hadn't realized just how cold I was until that very moment.

"Thank you for being so brave earlier," Dmitri said. "It was important that my men saw what I wanted them to see in real life. I could explain it until I was blue in the face, but I doubted they would believe me if they didn't see themselves."

I still wasn't quite sure what Dmitri was trying to show them, but I had wanted to help him, especially after all the ways he'd been helping me. I was mute, not stupid. I knew exactly about all of the things Dmitri had been doing to make me feel safe.

I just wished I was brave enough to tell him why I would never be safe. Maybe someday I could tell him, but that day was not here yet.

The man stilled when I reached up and touched his lips. I slid my finger down over to a small scar just under his lip and ran it back and forth across it.

"Motorcycle accident when I was twenty-one," he explained. "When I crashed my bike my two front teeth went through my lip."

I wrinkled my nose at him.

He chuckled. "It was a long time ago, Eiji."

I waved my hand up and down his body.

"Do I have more scars?"

I nodded.

"I have a few. I'm thirty-five years old, Eiji, and I'm in a very dangerous business, as you well know. Injuries happen."

Oh, I was fully aware. In two short days, Dmitri had been shot and knocked unconscious. I couldn't wait to see if he could go the next two days without getting hurt.

I smacked his chest and narrowed my eyes at him.

Dmitri grinned before tightening the arm he had wrapped around my waist. "I promise to try not to get hurt."

I huffed as I settled my head on his arm.
